Product description
The True Story of Downton Abbey,
narrated by Lady Fiona Carnarvon, Mistress of Highclere Castle. The place where the incredibly successful television series was filmed. Lady Fiona Carnarvon became Mistress of Highclere Castle in 2001. In the years since then, she has become completely enthralled by Highclere's rich history and the extraordinary people who have lived here over the centuries.
One person in particular captured Fiona's imagination - Lady Almina, the Fifth Countess. Almina was born as the illegitimate child of the banking magnate Alfred de Rothschild. She was the only daughter he had a crush on. At the age of nineteen, she married the fifth Earl of Carnarvon, bringing an immeasurably large dowry to the marriage. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying whirlwind of lavish receptions for five hundred people, with the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw a staff of eighty, many of whose families had served at Highclere for generations.
But after the outbreak of the First World War, life in the castle changed forever. History intervened and Almina and Highclere's staff found themselves in one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to unearth the most hidden reserves of her courage and somehow ensure the survival of her family, servants and the castle.
This is a remarkable story of lost times. However, Highclere has survived to this day, and this book offers a glimpse into the heritage and history of one of England's most magnificent Victorian castles.
"Lively, energetic and unsophisticated."
