Spring 1915, Fiume. The Italians transfer to the Entente powers, for this reason a young Hungarian peasant woman who emigrated cannot go back to America, from where she came home with her daughter born there for the son she left at home. So he goes back to his village in Slavonia, to his unloving mother and weak father. He stays on his own, tries to live with the two children as best he can, with friendships, loves, struggles. The war and the chaos of the collapse sweep over them, the woman has to flee to Hungary with the children. He goes through the revolution, the commune, finds a home with a retired teacher, but history catches up with him there, he has to create a new home and fight for himself and his two children. Yet he goes to bed with this prayer over and over again every night: Thank God.
