The Aqara P2 door and window opening sensor is the manufacturer's new magnetic opening/closing sensor released in Q3 2023, with Thread protocol support and Matter standard compatibility. The P2 door and window sensor uses the Thread protocol, not Zigbee, and is compatible with third-party Thread border routers, and Matter compatibility provides broad compatibility with all Matter-enabled platforms.

The P2 door and window sensor uses the Thread protocol wireless communication protocol, not Zigbee, so it is compatible with other manufacturers' Thread border routers. It also offers compatibility with the Matter standard from the factory, so it can be combined with Matter-compatible devices from other manufacturers without any problems. The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 not only includes all the advanced automation and security features offered by Aqara, but also allows users to connect it directly to third-party central units, e.g. for Thread border routers built into newer Wi-Fi routers or smart speakers, voice assistants, thus taking advantage of all the advantages of the Matter smart home standard.

To use this device via the Thread protocol, you must have a "Thread border router" device. If you want to use this sensor via the Matter standard, such a Thread border router must also be Matter compatible.

Now in July 2023, the following Thread border routers support Matter and are compatible with the Aqara P2 sensor:

Build on the advantages of the Thread protocol: Devices using the new Thread protocol provide robust, low-latency and mesh-capable communication.
Factory Matter compatibility: Entering the era of the Matter standard, users no longer need to worry about different smart home platforms and technical protocols, and only need a Matter app and a Matter-compatible Thread Border Router. This means that connections between ecosystems and platforms have become simpler and easier, as the Matter standard allows direct connection to platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and others.

As one of the first sensors to natively support Matter, the P2 door and window sensor can connect directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings (and soon Aqara Home) via a Matter-enabled Aqara Thread border router. With this, you can build a variety of smart home controls, which can even operate entirely on the local network if you use a local hub.
