Anna Burns - milky

Being interesting in this unnamed city is dangerous. Our narrator, the middle sister, does everything to keep her relationship with her son a secret from her mother, and the fact that Tejes surrounded her from the community. But when her brother-in-law, the first brother-in-law, takes responsibility for her quarrel, the rumor spreads and the middle sister becomes "interesting" overnight. Yet that was exactly what he wanted the least. Because whoever is interesting is noticed, and whoever is noticed is no longer safe anywhere.
The Man Booker Prize winner Tejes is a novel of rumors and gossip, a novel of silence and deliberate non-hearing - a novel of inaction with fatal consequences.

Cats don't fan like dogs. They don't care about anything. They can never be relied upon to bolster a human ego. They go their own way, do their own thing, never bow down and never apologize. No one has ever met a cat that apologized, and if he did, it was obvious that he was not sincere. As for dead cats - cats that were killed on purpose, of course - I have seen them many times. I saw them when I was a child, when cats were considered parasites, subversive, witch-like, when they represented the left hand, bad luck, femininity - although no one ever targeted femininity, only when drunk, and later drunkenness was cited as a reason if violence applied to some unhappy woman. Men and boys killed the cats, or at least kicked and threw stones at them. It was one of those things that just happened, so you didn't say anything when you saw a dead cat.
