The story takes place in the 1890s in Sudan, one of the largest English colonies in Africa. Five young elite officers live their boring days in a rural garrison. One day they receive an order: as reinforcements, they must reach Khartoum within seven days to protect the besieged British headquarters. Four of the five officers are happy to finally fight. Harry (Heath Ledger), on the other hand, fears for his life and future. He has recently become engaged to Ethne (Kate Hudson), the daughter of a retired officer. He renounces his rank and mission. However, he does not count on the violent reaction of his surroundings: he receives four bird feathers from his friends and lover, which symbolize cowardice. Her future father-in-law also denies it. All he has to do is free his friends who were captured in the process.
