Bulgaria's almost fifty thousand Jews avoided deportation twice during the Second World War. The most important role in its rescue was played by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
The hoped-for revision also pushed Bulgaria into the arms of Hitler's Germany. In 1940, as an obligation of the realized territorial expansion, the Bulgarian parliament introduced severe disenfranchisement and discrimination against the Jewish population on the model of the Nuremberg Racial Laws. The Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church condemned this from the beginning.
With a target date of March 10-11, the secret scenario of the deportations was completed by the beginning of 1943, but the deportation of Macedonian and Thracian Jews to concentration camps already shook the Bulgarian Jewish community and the Bulgarian public opinion, and in response to the protests of ruling party representatives III. On March 9, Czar Boris stopped the assemblies. Nevertheless, in Plovdiv on the morning of March 10, a few hundred Jews were rounded up for deportation. Metropolitan Kiril of Plovdiv declared that he was with them. Representatives of the Orthodox Church also protested in Sliven, Sumen, Pazardzhik, Haskovo and Samokov. Finally, the postponement order reached everywhere by noon.
After 500 years of Turkish rule, Bulgarian society was not characterized by bourgeois traditions and a solid democratic value system, but it was still capable of great deeds during the Holocaust. Dontsev Toso, who as a Hungarian Bulgarian has an equal view of the history of both countries and peoples, authentically seeks the opening of this unique history in his study that fills the gaps.
